What is “butyl rubber”?

“LANXESS goes Asia” is a formula for success embraced by the Leverkusen, Germany-based chemicals group. LANXESS now generates nearly one fifth of its sales in the growth markets of Asia, and intends to sharpen its focus on the needs of its customers in the region. One milestone along this path is the planned production facility for butyl rubber in Singapore. At EUR 400 million, this is the biggest single capital expenditure project in the company’s history.

The site is of major strategic importance for LANXESS. Singapore functions as a distribution hub for LANXESS products in the Asia-Pacific region, with a total of 13 business units managing their Southeast Asian business from here. With its first production facility in this region, LANXESS is reacting to the growing demand for butyl rubber, a high-tech material used primarily in tires – more and more of which are being produced in Asia.
