Steady as a Rock

How Perlon® keeps deep-sea vessels under control

Longer than three soccer fields and loaded with almost 10,000 containers, the MSC Pamela is one of the world’s largest container ships. Mooring such huge vessels securely at quayside takes ropes you can really rely on. Once hooked around the cleats on shore, these huge hawsers must be able to hold such tremendous craft firmly in place so that their cargo can be safely unloaded. In order to secure the MSC Pamela, the Mediterranean Shipping Company, the ship’s operator, therefore opts for exceptionally strong Atlas® brand synthetic ropes. When it comes to restraining large loads, these products are every bit as reliable as steel hawsers and boast many other advantages as well.

LANXESS plays a leading role in this story. That’s because Atlas® ropes are made of what are known as “monofilaments.” This high-performance plastic wire is manufactured by the LANXESS subsidiary Perlon®-Monofil GmbH. Approximately 27,000 kilometers of this product leave the plant in Dormagen each year — enough to make about 360 kilometers of Atlas® hawsers. The formula for success from Dormagen has been a market success for more than 50 years now — largely thanks to the material used.
