Climate Protection “Made by LANXESS”
From Kyoto to Bali, protection of the climate is at the top of the agenda for policymakers around the world. Keeping the results of the greenhouse effect in check is now one of the main concerns of industry and our society as a whole. As a driving force in the chemicals industry and a true global player, LANXESS too is taking on responsibility for the environment. By 2012, LANXESS intends to reduce emissions of environmentally harmful greenhouse gases in Germany by 80 percent relative to 2007 levels. LANXESS AG Chief Executive Officer Dr. Axel C. Heitmann explains how the specialty chemicals group is implementing its climate-protection strategy throughout the company.
WebMagazin: How do you intend to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases?
Dr. Axel C. Heitmann:
We will significantly reduce the emissions of nitrous oxide, which is particularly harmful to the climate. In 2009, LANXESS will start up a new thermal reduction plant for nitrous oxide (laughing gas) in Krefeld-Uerdingen that will go a long way toward accomplishing that goal. Work is underway on sustainable solutions for climate protection at the LANXESS sites, and not just in Germany but around the world, whether they involve innovations in industrial processes, the switch to cogeneration, or the use of renewable raw materials.
