Combined heat and power (CHP) is a particularly environmentally efficient way of generating energy. Electricity and heat are generated and used together. In this way, it is possible to achieve an overall utilization rate of more than 90% of the primary energy used. In comparison, conventional energy generation usually results in high energy losses of more than 40%. In the port of Antwerp, Belgium, we use a steam cogeneration plant together with other chemical companies based there. It was commissioned in 2019. The system helps us reduce our energy costs and CO2 emissions by about 10,000 metric tons per year. If you look at the effect for all the companies involved, it totals 100,000 metric tons annually.
